It all started with a question: Why can’t you find a decent scoop of gelato in the Bay Area?

Our founders are three friends who traveled all over the world and everywhere they went, they had to try the gelato. It was just one of those things that they cared about. And back in California’s Bay Area, despite its international reputation for fine cuisine, they just couldn’t find gelato they were proud of. So they decided to do something about it.

They decided to make it themselves.

They met with and learned from master gelato artisans from Italy. They visited local dairies, farms and chocolate makers. They took university courses in Italian and American ice cream. And, after trying everything and cultivating their own personal recipes, they found that there are only two simple components to an outstanding gelato: pure, natural ingredients and small, artisanal batches.

Our gelato is made by hand in small batches so it can always be enjoyed fresh. Only choice natural ingredients are used to ensure it is the finest-tasting gelato you will find in the Bay Area, or anywhere else.

Finally, with the same care that went into creating their gelato, a name was selected for their gelateria: Naia┬« was born. Naia has many meanings, in Greek it means “flowing” and “pure,” but to us, it also has a special meaning. Naia is the name of one of the owner’s daughter, who was born at the same time our first store opened.

Naia carries that same commitment to quality into our gelaterias. The friendly, knowledgeable people who work for Naia are gelato enthusiasts. They know gelato. They understand what makes Naia’s gelato so special, and they will generously offer samples and suggest flavors. Naia is a place that is sophisticated, upscale, and European; a unique environment where you can truly enjoy your gelato.

But don’t just take our word for it; the flavor and quality of Naia’s gelato speaks for itself. Come into any of our locations and sample the traditional Gianduia or Zabajone, or try one of our own unique creations like Cioccolato Mortale or Foresta Nero. Your first sample is free, as is the tenth, or even the hundredth. We know that after tasting our gelato, you will be as fond of Naia as we are.
